Site Survey & Constructability Coordination

Successful civil and telecommunications works begin with an accurate understanding of existing site conditions.

Constructability coordination considers proposed routes, existing utilities, site access, pathway constraints, building interfaces and potential construction conflicts.

Scope at a glance

  • Site and route surveySurfaces, access, existing pits and obstructions
  • Service locatingFrom BYDA information, marked on site
  • PotholingDepth and position confirmed where uncertain
  • Constructability reviewRoutes, pathways and building interfaces
  • Conflict listRaised before construction proceeds
Where it fits
Before construction proceeds, while routes and pathways can still be adjusted.
Typically engaged by
Principal contractors, designers, developers and network delivery contractors.

Scope

What the scope covers

Practical site findings can then be communicated to the principal contractor and relevant design personnel before construction proceeds.

  • Site and route survey

Surface types, access, existing pits and pathways, obstructions and reinstatement requirements, recorded with photos and mark-ups.

  • Service locating

Existing services located and marked from Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) information, confirmed by potholing where depth or position is uncertain.

  • Constructability review

Proposed routes, pathway constraints, building interfaces, crossings and access checked against the site, with potential conflicts identified before pricing.

  • Design coordination

Site findings communicated to the principal contractor and the responsible designer, so pit locations, routes and depths can be adjusted before construction.

  • As-built information

Routes, depths, pit positions and photos recorded so as-built drawings can be prepared accurately.

Delivery

How a survey engagement runs

The order the work runs on site. Services are located and exposed before any machine excavation.

  1. Step 1

    Desktop review

Drawings, BYDA responses and existing network records reviewed before attending site.

  2. Step 2

    Site walk and locate

Route walked, services located and marked, constraints photographed.

  3. Step 3

    Findings and conflicts

Conflicts, depth clashes, surfaces, access and building interfaces recorded against the proposed route.

  4. Step 4

    Coordinate

Findings communicated to the principal and the designer before construction proceeds.

Interfaces and records

Coordination, site constraints and handover records

What KZ COM coordinates with the other parties on the job, the constraints planned for before mobilising, and the records supplied at handover.

Delivery interfaces

Designer or network planner
Findings marked up against the design for the designer to revise.
Principal contractor
Access, programme and the format for records.
Asset owners
BYDA responses, locate records and any supervision requirements.

Site constraints planned for

  • Services of uncertain depth or position
  • Surface types and reinstatement
  • Access, driveways and pedestrian routes
  • Building entries and pathway space

Records supplied

  • Locate marks and photos
  • Marked-up route and conflict list
  • Pothole positions and depths
  • As-built field information

Health, safety & quality

Safety and quality on this scope

The controls and checks that matter most on this work.

Health, Safety & Quality

Underground services

Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) information reviewed, services located and marked, and crossings exposed by vacuum excavation or by hand before machine excavation.

Site-specific SWMS

Where the scope includes high-risk construction work, such as trenching, work near underground services or beside traffic, the Safe Work Method Statement is reviewed with the crew before work starts.

Inspection points

Depths, pit levels, conduit continuity and surface finish checked during and at the end of the work.

Handover records

Depths, routes, pit positions and photos captured as the work goes in, for the as-built package.

For estimators

Information needed to price it

  • Site address or route extents
  • Design drawings or a marked-up plan, if available
  • BYDA referral responses
  • Programme dates and access constraints
  • The format you need for records and as-builts

Scope and responsibilities

  • Design, design certification and design approval sit with the responsible designer and the network owner. KZ COM supplies field information and coordinates with whoever holds design responsibility.
  • Where position or depth is still uncertain after locating, potholing confirms it before construction proceeds.

Tell us who is engaging the work and what your specification requires, and KZ COM will confirm its part before pricing.
